If you have a question that hasn’t been answered by this page, reach out to our council members. We will make sure you know what’s up!

Can I try out a class before I sign up?

We have trial classes in mid-September in our most popular styles (typically heels, contemporary and hip hop), which will be posted on our social media pages when confirmed. Here you will be able to meet our council and experience our society before you commit. We do not typically offer trial classes for new members mid-term due to the need to pre-register participants, but students wishing to switch levels/ classes mid-semester may be able to take a trial class depending on capacity limits.

How do I register? Can I join late?

We open registration for our programs in September and January. See our Registration Information tab for all the details! Missed registration? Not a problem, we accept late registration for all classes in the fall + our technique stream classes in the winter.

Do you have to be a Dal student to join?

As of current Dalplex rules, you must have a Dalplex membership to come to classes in the facility. Dal/Kings students or staff (yes faculty is welcome to dance with us!) typically have a membership! If you are not a Dalplex member, you can take classes that are offered in Studley studio for no additional fee.

Help! I'm on CO-OP and don't have Dalplex access. Can I still dance?

As of current Dalplex rules, you must have a Dalplex membership to come to classes in the facility. Council may be able to assist you with this barrier if you are on a work placement and will be returning to Dal in the next term. Reach out to us for more information!

How do I know what level to take?

Are you new to dance? We recommend our foundations classes in ballet and hip hop to get started. Once you feel cozy in those classes, try out some new styles in our beginner or intermediate levels. We recommend at least one year of dance experience before progressing to intermediate classes and 3 years for advanced. If you are unsure about what to take, feel free to reach out to any of our instructors!

What do I wear to class? Do I need special shoes?

Whatever makes you feel your best self! We recommend form fitting clothing for ballet, acro and jazz + whatever makes you feel cool in hip hop and jazz funk. Try and avoid large earrings, or clothing that can catch on your (or someone else’s) hair. You don’t need to come to ballet in a leotard and tights (unless you want to) and the only classes where shoes are strongly recommended are tap and heels!

Where are classes held?

Our classes are held in the Dalplex Studios as well as the studio in the basement of the Studley gym. Check your class schedule to see where your class is being held.

How much do classes cost?

Fees will depend on how many classes you take. Our pricing tab has all the information.

How do I apply to teach?

We typically hire instructors for the fall/winter terms each spring (around May/June). The application process involves submitting an interest form, choreography and teaching sample, and an interview with the Vice President and President.

I can't make it every week? Can I still sign up?

Absolutely! In the fall, attendance is not mandatory unless you are in a full class with a waitlist. We simply ask that if you can’t make your class, you send us an email so we can let a waitlisted student come in your place. In the winter, our performance stream classes have an attendance policy (must attend 7/10 classes), but our technique stream classes do not, and attendance is optional.

What is your refund policy?

In most cases, we do not offer refunds mid-semester. If an extenuating circumstance occurs during the first 4 weeks of class (serious injury, serious physical/mental illness, relocation, family emergency), please reach out to council and we will assess your situation on a case-by-case basis. We do process class/ level change requests for free during the first 2 weeks of classes (after that, there is a small administration fee) and you can add classes for their full cost at any point in the term.

How much fun will I have?

So much fun! We can’t wait to welcome you into our dance family. Trust us, DalDance classes will quickly become the highlight of your week.
